Local Insight
Understanding the Dover Contractor Market
New Hampshire’s oldest permanent settlement and the largest city on the Seacoast, with 32,741 people.
Dover had 32,741 residents at the 2020 Census, making it the most populous city in the New Hampshire Seacoast region and the fifth most populous in the state. Settled in 1623 by brothers William and Edward Hilton at Dover Point, it is the oldest permanent settlement in New Hampshire and the seventh oldest in the country. Early settlers built fortified log houses called garrisons, which gave Dover its nickname, the Garrison City; the Damm Garrison from 1675, the oldest intact garrison house in the state, now stands at the Woodman Institute. The town center later moved to the falls on the Cochecho River, where a 34-foot drop powered mills including the Cocheco Manufacturing Company. The Cochecho River and the Spaulding Turnpike both cut through the city, the Bellamy River runs along its western side, and Garrison Hill rises above downtown with a park and lookout tower. For contractors, that means historic homes and converted mill buildings, established neighborhoods across the city, and New Hampshire winters that keep heating and roofing calls coming.
Downtown Dover
The former Cochecho village at the falls, home to the restored Cocheco Mills and the city’s rail station.
Dover Point
Where the Hilton brothers first settled in 1623, now home to Hilton Park on the Piscataqua.
Garrison Hill
The hill rising directly above downtown, with a park and lookout tower on top.
Bellamy
A named area along the Bellamy River on the city’s western side.
Dover Neck
The area where the permanent settlement took hold in the 1600s.
Long Hill
Dover’s highest point, about three miles northwest of the city center.
Key differentiator: Dover pairs nearly 400 years of history, including converted mill buildings and older homes, with established neighborhoods across a growing Seacoast city. Contractors who show they handle both, and who rank across the whole city, win more of the work.
We build pages, Google Business Profile posts, and reviews around the Dover neighborhoods and job types you want.
