Local Insight
Understanding the Bangor Contractor Market
The county seat of Penobscot County, 31,753 people at the head of navigation on the Penobscot River.
Bangor had 31,753 residents at the 2020 Census on about 34 square miles of land, and its metro area counted more than 152,000 people. It sits at the head of navigation on the Penobscot River, directly across from Brewer, where the Kenduskeag Stream meets the river. First known as Kenduskeag Plantation, Bangor was incorporated as a town in 1791, became a city in 1834, and has been the Penobscot County seat since 1816. After 1830 it grew into one of the leading lumber ports in the country. Bangor International Airport, owned by the city, occupies the former Dow Air Force Base and is home to the Bangor Air National Guard Base. Husson University is in the city, and the University of Maine’s main campus is nine miles upriver in Orono. For contractors, that means a historic city core, a metro of more than 150,000 people, and long Maine winters that keep heating, plumbing, and roofing calls coming.
Downtown Bangor
The historic core where the Kenduskeag Stream meets the Penobscot River.
Penobscot Riverfront
The waterfront facing Brewer across the river, where Bangor’s lumber trade once shipped out.
Airport Area
The area around Bangor International Airport and the Air National Guard base, on the former Dow Air Force Base.
Kenduskeag Stream Corridor
Neighborhoods along the stream that gave the original plantation its name.
Husson University Area
Residential streets around Husson University, founded in 1898.
Bangor City Forest Area
The outer part of the city near Bangor City Forest.
Key differentiator: Bangor is the hub for a metro of more than 150,000 people, and Maine winters drive a lot of heating, plumbing, and roofing work. Contractors who rank across the city and out into the surrounding towns stay busier through the season.
We build pages, Google Business Profile posts, and reviews around the Bangor neighborhoods and job types you want, plus the towns around it.
